Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) along with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are two terms commonly used interchangeably, causing confusion between many. Although they have similarities however, they are distinct diseases with distinct diagnostic criteria and features.
Understanding ADD and ADHD

ADD (which is an acronym for Attention Deficit Disorder was a term that was previously used to define the condition characterized mostly by distractibility, inattention and difficulty in focusing. The condition didn't always involve hyperactivity. However, in 1994 it was the year that there was a change in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) included ADD as well as ADHD within the term "ADHD." This change aimed in naming ADHD more accurately and reflected the wide range of the symptoms that are seen in people who have challenges with attention.

ADHD - The Comprehensive Term

ADHD also known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is comprised of three main subtypes:
Predominantly inattentive Presentation (ADHD-PI) The subtype aligns more closely with the conventional definition of ADD. It can be characterized by symptoms of the inability to organize tasks, forgetfulness and being easily distracted. In this subtype, impulsivity and hyperactivity are less evident in this subtype.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation (ADHD-PH): This subtype is characterized by hyperactivity and impulsivity without significant inattention symptoms. Individuals with ADHD-PH may have difficulty sitting still while interacting with others and engaging in impulsive behavior without thinking about the implications.
Combine Presentation (ADHD-C) (ADHD-C): This is the most well-known subtype. It is an amalgamation of inattention hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity.

Key Differences Between ADD vs ADHD

Hyperactivity ADD primarily focuses on inattention, whereas ADHD includes hyperactivity and impulsivity as a component of its fundamental criteria.
The diagnosis: ADD is an outdated term no longer used to describe diagnosis. Clinicians are now using ADHD and identify the subtypes based upon the most prevalent symptoms.
Treatment options for ADHD differ according to the subtype. Stimulant medications or behavioral therapy as well as lifestyle changes are typical treatments for all types of ADHD.
Impact: ADHD can have a more significant impact on your daily life because of the additional problems of hyperactivity and the tendency to be impulsive.
Diagnosis and Management

Recognizing ADHD involves a thorough assessment by a healthcare professional and includes interviews with the patient, behavioral assessments, and gathering information from parents, teachers, and the individual. Management strategies often include:
Medication: Stimulants such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) or amphetamine (Adderall) can be used to treat symptoms.
Behavior Therapy: Behavioral therapy, also known as cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as behavioral therapies aid in improving coping skills as well as executive functioning.
Education: Psychoeducation for people and their families may help to understand and manage the condition effectively.
In conclusion, even though ADD and ADHD might appear identical, they represent distinct stages in the development of recognizing the challenges related to attention. ADHD is a current and more expansive term, comprising a variety of subtypes that have distinct symptoms. The correct diagnosis and individual treatment plans are crucial to successfully managing the condition and improving the quality of life for those who suffer from.
(Note: Quaaludes are a sedative-hypnotic drug that was withdrawn from medical reasons because of security concerns. They are not relevant in the debate of ADD and. ADHD and should not be included in this context.)
